Tennis for beginners..uhh no experience?

I just signed up for tennis for my freshmen gym class. i never played tennis (besides the Wii) before and im like freaking out. i have no tennis racquets or tennis balls. i may ask my mom for some but idk. where is a good place to buy racquets and shoes? and what are the basics of tennis? im sure ill be the worst on my tennis team. and its going to be beginnners. the scariest part is tryouts. im afraid the coaches will probably think im very bad and as well as the others who are trying out. can somebody help me boost my confidence?

All you need is the kind of racquet you'd find at wal-mart, or a cheap one from Dick's. Don't look to spend more than 50 bucks, and you can probably get away with 30. As for the shoes, as long as you have an athletic shoe with a non-marking outsole, it'll work. Real tennis shoes are expensive, and you probably wouldn't benefit from them right now.

Also, don't worry too much about being the worst one out there. There's always a few people in your position. At this point, all you need to do is show the coaches that you want to be there. If they see that, you should be fine. I'm sure there's a junior varisty you can play on. That will give you the opportunity to learn the game and get some match experience. Just try as hard as you can and show up to all the practices.

Here's a few tips for getting started (assuming you are right-handed):
1. Hold the racquet in your left hand by the head, with the strings perpendicular to the ground. Now, use your right hand to pretend you are shaking hands with the handle. There's the grip you need for now.
2. Always turn sideways before you hit the ball. You should be facing the side that the ball will end up on. (basically, don't keep your body facing the net all the time)
3. Swing low to high. This is the most important thing for getting the ball under control, and over the net.
4. After you've hit the ball, follow through over your left shoulder for a forehand, right for a backhand.
5. The swing is the same for a backhand, but you will now have two hands on the racquet. You should put your extra hand above your main hand on the racquet (in other words, never move your dominant hand)

This should get you started. Good luck!
