Should I cut the string of a tennis racket before storage?
should I cut the strings of a tennis racket before putting it in storage for a LONG time? Is there any reason to do this ?
This is a very interesting question. I own a tennis shop and we string 4000 racquets a year.
I guess there are two parts to the question:
1) will leaving the strings in a racquet for a longtime hurt the racquet?
The answer is NO. It will not hurt the racquet.
We have seen plenty of racquet come to our shop that obviously
have not been restrung in a very long time and when we put new
strings in them, they are just like new.
2) If the strings sit in the racquet for a while are they any good?
This is a big question and is untested. One might think that if the string sits for years under 60 pounds of tension, it would gradually creep down to almost nothing. Now we all know that after sitting for a few days the string tension drops by 10 pounds. But that is just a fact of playing tennis, basically when strung at 60, we all really play at 50, except for a top pro who has his racquet restrung just before he hits. But the question, and I don't have an answer, is if a racquet sits for a long time does the tension drop much more, or does it stabilize and "minus 10 pounds".
An interesting corollary to this is that tension is really not as important as we think. Some tests have shown that only 20% of players, including a lot of top pros, don;t know a tension difference of 15 pounds.
